Like a bee hive, the Aliens have a single fertile Queen and many sterile drones. The Queen lays eggs which contain their larval form which eventually turns into a drone.
No one is sure where the Aliens came from or what their species is actually called. In fact these poor creatures were almost extinct until an interstellar commercial towing-vehicle, the Nostromo, landed on LV-426 to investigate the distress signal coming from their ship. All that was left of their species were eggs in stasis. One crew member helps hatch an egg and nurtures the larval form of the Alien, allowing it to turn into a drone.
Unfortunately the drone died at the hands of Lieutenant Ripley. She never did understand these poor creatures. She viewed their protective ways as hostile and felt threatened by the Aliens. With no queen the eggs stayed in stasis awaiting further help.
The Weyland-Yutani Corporation took it upon themselves to help the Aliens. They sent an entire colony to LV-426. They were to colonize the planet and help the Aliens as best they could. This was just what the Aliens needed to flourish.
Not long after they arrived eggs started hatching and larval forms were nourished. A Queen was born and reproduction was able to begin again. Pretty soon the Alien numbers almost equaled those of the colonists.
The colonists were so involved with the Aliens they forgot to check in with the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. They became worried and sent in marines to make sure all was well with the inhabitants of LV-426. They enlisted the aid of Lt. Ripley as a consultant. She agreed to help, but her motives were different from the company's. She still thought they were a threat even though they were living with the colonists. She nearly wiped them out once again.
The poor creatures are constantly misunderstood and as a result are in danger of becoming extinct. The Weyland-Yutani Corporation is determined that this does not happen and is attempting to re-establish a colony of Aliens that can thrive without interference.
