Ash Williams

Ash is your typical 20-something loud-mouth braggart. He works at S-Mart in the house wares department, where he tells people to shop smart, shop S-Mart. He had a girlfriend and a relatively normal life.

Ash, his girlfriend Linda, his sister Cheryl, and two friends thought it would be fun to spend a few days in a cabin in the woods. They just wanted to party and hang out, but something else was in store for them.

After goofing off a bit they explored the cellar of the house. They found a strange book and a tape recorder left by the previous inhabitant, Professor Knowby. The professor was studying the book and had recorded his findings. The group decided to play the tape and were frightened by what they heard. The professor was translating the creepy book on to the recorder.

That recording played a passage from the book designed to call forth demons who could possess the living. Ash and his friends had unwittingly set loose an evil the professor spoke of. That evil would eventually leave Ash alone in those woods fighting for his sanity and his life.

He is more of a coward than your average hero. He did things out of fear for his life and usually managed to mess them up somehow. He was forced to fight his own possessed hand and eventually had to cut it off. He then rigged a chainsaw to his stump so he wouldn't be fighting one handed.

Ash tried to get rid of the evil he and his friends had let loose, so he read a passage from the book. He found one that would open a portal and send the evil back to where it came from. He blundered that, of course.

He wound up in medieval times in the middle of a war and soon realized that the evil he tried to escape was there as well. The book that started it all was there as well. All he had to do to go home was go to the book, say the words, grab the book and head back.
He, being the dimwitted hero he was, messed that up as well.
