Norman Bates grew up in the Bates Motel, an inn run by his parents near Sacramento, CA. After his father's death, Norman was raised by his mother, Norma. The two of them lived alone together in the house on the hill behind the motel. They were extremely close and depended on each other. She brought him up to believe that women and sex were evil.
As a result of his mother's domineering ways, Norman grew up soft spoken and shy, especially around women. He dutifully believed everything his mother told him...
He eventually became the proprietor of the Bates Motel, where he secretly lusted after female motel guests. He would spy on them as they changed their clothes or showered. Mother, of course, disapproved of his lust, and would cause the young woman Norman desired to leave.
Still, Norman dearly loved his mother in spite of her constant disapproval and severe emotional (and possible sexual) abuse of him.
"I think I must have one of those faces you can't help believing."
~Norman Bates
