Woo-jin had a very close relationship with his sister, Soo-ah, growing up. In high school a young man, Oh Dae-su, started a vicious rumor about their relationship which led to the death of Soo-ah. She jumped off of a bridge out of fear and shame because of those rumors. Woo-jin was devastated.
He spent the next 15 years trying to get Dae-su to realize the impact of his vicious rumors. Dae-su was unwilling to listen, however, and spent an equal amount of time trying to remember what Woo-jin was talking about. He remembers Soo-ah dying, but he believes that Woo-jin is responsible. Eventually he agrees to meet with Woo-jin to discuss all of it face to face.
Woo-jin was thrilled at his chance to get Dae-su to admit what he did. He went through great lengths to try to convince Dae-su that he was the reason behind Soo-ah's death. Dae-su tries just as hard to convince Woo-jin that he is not responsible, but Woo-jin himself killed her. The meeting did not go as planned.
Woo-jin just wanted justice for his sister's death. He wanted Dae-su to admit responsibility and nothing more. He was more than devastated when he realized Dae-su would not admit his part in her death. He eventually gave up trying.
"You really are the very monster I created, aren't you?"
