The Mummy (1932)

The Mummy

In 1921 a British Museum expedition to Egypt uncovers a number of ancient artifacts, but the most important of them all is a tomb with a mummy preserved in it for 3,700 years. The archaeologists also find a chest with a curse on it commanding nobody to open it, but the younger archaelogist, Ralph Norton (Bramwell Fletcher), decides to open it, naturally, and inside is an ancient scroll, called the Scroll of Thoth, which Isis used to raise Osiris from the dead in ancient times, according to legend. Much to the surprise of Norton on the 1921 expedition, and to the surprise of no viewers, the mummy, supposedly dead for thousands of years, walks away and takes the scroll with him.

Eleven years later, another expedition in the area has proved largely unsuccessful, until a mysterious man named Ardath Bey (Boris Karloff) helps them find a buried princess named Anck-es-en-Amon. Soon after returning to England, Frank Whemple (David Manners), the leader of the expedition, meets Helen Grosvenor (Zita Johann) and instantly falls in love with her, seemingly. Unfortunately, Ardath, who is actually named Imhotep (i.e. The Mummy), believes that Helen is the reincarnated Princess Anck-es-en-Amon, so he wants to seize her and make her join him as an immortal princess in The Mummy.
